PACKAGING AT THE BODY SHOP

DISCOVER OUR UNIQUE RECYCLED PLASTIC & PACKAGING PROJECTS

We’re changing the way we think about plastic and packaging so we can work towards being the most sustainable brand we can be. Learn about the projects we’re working on to make this a reality.

WHAT RECYCLING PROJECTS ARE WE WORKING ON?

COMMUNITY TRADE RECYCLED PLASTIC

We want to help empower people and protect our planet, so we’ve started using Community Trade recycled plastic from Bengaluru, India, in our 250ml Shampoo and Conditioner bottles.*

Community Trade recycled plastic not only helps tackle the global plastic crisis. In its first years, our commitment will also aim to help empower 2,500 ‘waste pickers’ in Bengaluru with a fair price, stable income, access to better working conditions and social services, and the respect and recognition they deserve.

HOW ARE WE REDUCING OUR IMPACT ON THE PLANET?

Our responsibility is for the long-term. This is why we want to tackle the plastics crisis with changes that last. We know we’ve got a long way to go. Don’t worry. This is just the start. With your help, who knows what we can achieve together next?

HOW DOES OUR RECYCLING SCHEME WORK?

STEP 1:

Next time you visit us in store, return our empty plastic bottles, tubs, tubes and pots. Speak to a member of staff first so they can tell you about our recycling scheme, what you can recycle and where to return our empties.

STEP 2:

With a member of staff, put our clean, empty packaging into the recycling bin. Once the bin is full,we send it to our recycling partner

STEP 3:

Next time you visit us, do it again! Every time you bring our empty packaging in store, we’ll recycle it. It really is that simple.

*T&Cs apply.

HERE IS OUR TIMELINE FOR BECOMING A MORE SUSTAINABLE BRAND:

2022

We’re aiming for a minimum of 75% PCR (post-consumer recycled) plastic across all product lines by 2022. This is a big leap from our current 10% PCR plastic across all our ranges. But why not aim for 100% PCR? If we did this, it would end up reducing the life of the recycled plastic, but by adding a small amount of virgin plastic we can ensure that everything we produce can continue being recycled.*

2025

All our plastic will be free of fossil fuel and, instead, we’ll collect 100% equivalent by weight of all our packaging waste to reuse within our supply chains.

2030

We will only be using three types of plastic instead of 20, making it easier for our consumers to recycle our products. With our ‘Return. Recycle. Repeat.’ and other schemes, we will collect 25% more packaging than we sell. This is not only great for the environmental footprint that packaging has – it also increases the pool of recycled materials for other industries to use.

*Virgin plastic used will be of a green source, bio based or equivalent, not fossil fuel derived!

USING MORE POST-CONSUMER RECYCLED PLASTIC IN OUR BOTTLES

Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) plastic is material that already exists and doesn’t require a new material to be created. This is why we’re moving to a minimum of 75% PCR in all our 60ml, 250ml and 750ml bottles. This accounts for approximately 580 tonnes of new plastic being saved every year.

These are our bottles made with 75% PCR from June 2019:

  • 49 Bath & Body and Fragrance Shower Gels.
  • 27 Bath & Body and Fragrance Body Lotions.
  • 20 Face Washes, Face Mists, Toners, Make-Up Remover and Make-Up Spray.
  • 17 Shampoos and Conditioners.
  • 6 Hand Gel Cleansers.
